Documentation and Analysis of the Local Tradition of Fish Qorogh-Shekani in the Ab-Bandans of Mazandaran, with an Emphasis on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage

Abstract
Qorogh-Shekani is a long-standing tradition among the people of Mazandaran Province, practiced to ensure the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and prevent environmental degradation in pastures, mountainous areas, and water reservoirs (Ab-Bandans). One manifestation of this tradition is fish Qorogh-Shekani in Ab-Bandans, which has a long history within the subsistence system of local communities. This study documents and analyzes the tradition of Qorogh-Shekani in the Ab-Bandans of Mazandaran and elucidates its role in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The research used a qualitative approach, drawing on oral narratives, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with knowledgeable local informants in the villages of Rudbast and Armichkola in Babolsar County, and Rement in Babol County. The findings indicate that, beyond its subsistence function, Qorogh-Shekani possesses cultural, social, and environmental dimensions, reflecting the connection among humans, nature, and the local community within the framework of indigenous ecological knowledge. Furthermore, this tradition constitutes part of the region's cultural identity and plays a role in the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, its continuity is challenged by generational discontinuity, the advancing age of tradition-bearers, changing lifestyles, the spread of new economic approaches, and declining local community participation. Accordingly, systematic documentation, strengthening local community participation, intergenerational transmission of knowledge, enhanced education, attention to the sanitary conditions of the Ab-Bandans, and the application of indigenous ecological knowledge management principles are among the most important strategies for safeguarding this intangible cultural heritage.
