The academic world, like other social worlds, is entangled in a set of argumentative and affective relations and, in this respect, is not separate from the ordinary social sphere. Over the past decades, scholars have sought to distinguish these two worlds through the use of key specialized concepts. One such concept is the scientific community. A range of studies in Iran has shown that the scientific community is not only a fragile and unstable formation, but also one that has increasingly lost its explanatory power in the academic world.
In this article, I argue that, on the basis of the existing literature, there is in practice no such thing as a scientific community. Yet, instead of revising their understanding of the existing situation, researchers have attempted to account for the weakness of the scientific community in Iran and, in most of their studies, have effectively justified the status quo. By reviewing the idea of the scientific community in sociological research and examining scholarly efforts to conceptualize it, this article offers a different response to a problem that Iranian scholars have understood in largely similar ways. The problem may be formulated as follows: now that researchers have demonstrated that no scientific community has taken shape in Iran, can the alternative concept of academic tribes serve as a more useful analytical framework?
This article seeks to demonstrate how this concept may open up a different path for scholars working within the scientific community perspective and contribute to explaining the mechanisms through which such tribes operate within universities. Whereas the concept of the scientific community seeks to explain scientific relations, scientific norms, academic ethics, and interactions among associations and journals within accepted scientific frameworks, the concept of academic tribes attempts to uncover the nature of overt and covert relations, as well as the emotions, interests, and desires that operate beneath the surface of ostensibly scientific norms.
