This article examines the process of Gelim production and exchange in Harsin County. Its theoretical approach draws on Karl Polanyi’s ideas concerning production and the types of exchange. The research method is ethnographic and the data collection techniques are observation and interview. The findings show that the county’s thriving animal husbandry and horticulture provide inexpensive raw materials for weavers. Designs and motifs are inspired by the local climate and social context, and weavers apply them mentally and creatively. Thus, the production process is embedded in social structures. In recent years, due to the commodification of Gelims, uniform and repetitive patterns have become more common. Gelim production is done in two ways: home and workshop. In the first case, the weavers own the tools of production and the product, and in the second case, they are paid and the produced goods are owned by the workshop owner. In the latter method, the degree of alienation from work and from the product is higher. The final product is exchanged in two ways: cooperative and market. The first method is based on informal relationships and to strengthen social relations. The second method is based on profit and loss and intermediaries play a large role in it. They occupy a high position in the value chain and earn the most profit. The dominance of market relations has pushed the Gelim sector toward commercial goods, and the process of dis-embedding has become widespread in this field. Reviewing support policies, creating fair mechanisms in production and distribution, and strengthening the social role of weavers are among the appropriate solutions for the advancement of this art-industry.
